Before we finalized any product, we had one rule: the dogs decide. πΎ
We gathered a mix of breeds, sizes, and eating personalities from our friends' dogs β from a speedy Labrador who inhales everything in 10 seconds flat, to a picky Shiba Inu who will absolutely judge your choices. Then we put a bunch of different slow feeder bowls in front of them and just... watched.
What We Were Looking At
We weren't trying to crown a winner. We were trying to understand patterns β what worked for which dog, and why. We tracked a few things across every session:
- Eating speed β did the bowl actually slow them down?
- Engagement β did the dog give up, or stay curious and keep going?
- Comfort β any pawing, frustration, or bowl-flipping? (Yes, that happened. πΉ)
- Finish rate β did they get all the food, or leave some behind in hard-to-reach spots?
What the Dogs Taught Us About Design
Maze depth mattered more than we expected. Bowls that were too shallow got solved almost immediately by the faster eaters. Bowls that were too deep frustrated smaller dogs who couldn't reach the bottom comfortably.
The sweet spot? A depth that slows down a medium-to-large dog meaningfully, while still being accessible for smaller snouts.
Material Reactions Were... Interesting
Dogs didn't seem to care much about what the bowl was made of β but their owners did, and that matters too. What we noticed is that certain textures held food differently, which affected how thoroughly dogs could clean the bowl. Some left more behind. Some were basically licked spotless. πΆ
The Designs That Surprised Us
A few bowls with more open, flowing patterns outperformed the tight maze designs β especially for dogs who got anxious or frustrated easily. Turns out, the goal isn't maximum difficulty. It's the right amount of challenge for the right dog.
That insight shaped a lot of how we thought about our own lineup.
So What Did We Actually Learn?
There's no single perfect slow feeder for every dog. Size, breed, eating style, and even personality all play a role. That's why we ended up building a range β not just one bowl β so you can find the one that actually fits your dog.
More on that soon. πΎ
